Renovations
Interiors
Belong

Ironically, this property was the old family home that Karen Wygers of KWA Architects grew up in. Our architectural intervention was not just a renovation but a revival. The initial challenge was formidable; the house had undergone puzzling renovations over the years, rendering it devoid of character, but through a meticulous and thoughtful approach, we embarked on a journey to reinvent and restore its soul.

To facilitate the transformation, our first step was to provide the client with a temporary home during the renovation process ensuring their comfort and convenience. This transition period was smoothly managed with the assistance of Belong, ensuring the family's needs were met while the house underwent its metamorphosis.

“We are very particular about the placement of doors and windows. This can change everything.”

Project Overview

Examining the existing structure, we sought the most effective yet subtle changes. The exterior, once a sad, lacklustre grey, found new life through a simple yet impactful palette—a refreshing coat of classic white on the walls, complemented by black window and door frames, and crowned by a sleek black roof.

Our Approach

Addressing the interior flow became a pivotal focus for this project. The entrance area was confusing, and once inside, there was a feeling of “I don’t know how to get outside…” We developed an entrance with a sequenced view alongside landscaper Tim Steyn who very cleverly softened the moment of arrival guiding guests and inviting them into the property.

Upon entering through the front door, the initial impression carries an air of formality due to the double volume ceilings and the presence of a grand staircase. However, this sense of formality is subtly tempered by carefully chosen finishes, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Within, a newfound sense of purpose and cohesion emerged. A floating lounge became the heart of the lower level, connecting the series of family living spaces, namely: the kitchen, breakfast nook, dining room and second lounge, all of which open out cleverly onto stoep areas sectioned into different zones designed to curl up with a book, gaze over the garden or share a meal.

The strategic placement of doors and windows, guided by Lorin Burgoyne’s meticulous eye, encouraged engagement and ownership of space. Functionality intertwined with aesthetics; the older kids have their realm, and the guest wing becomes a destination in itself. The study for the man of the house provides not just a workspace, but opens out onto the garden where he can enjoy the echo of the kids having a game of tennis.

The upstairs area underwent a transformation as well. The children's bedrooms, nestled in a passage to the left, offer privacy and comfort. To the right, the lady of the house's domain took form—a light-filled lounge and office space overlooking a carefully landscaped garden, dominated by the presence of a majestic jacaranda tree. This central lounge leads smoothly into the master suite, which enjoys the same views. The design aims not only to enhance indoor spaces but also to seamlessly integrate them with the outdoors.

Looking to the garden

the challenge of the house feeling disconnected from the external environment was met with a thoughtful landscaping strategy. Tim Steyn, a master of his craft, orchestrated a symphony of natural elements. A firepit nestled beside the kitchen just to the left of the dining room creates a cosy retreat, while terraced steps lined with creeping daisies guide visitors through romantic rose labyrinths. The outdoor spaces now flow effortlessly from the main lawn to a tranquil pool area lined with pink magnolia trees, culminating in a pergola overlooking the tennis court. The grand old jacaranda with its purple canopy becomes a focal point, peering into the master suite upstairs.Today, this dwelling stands not just as a house, but as a testament to the art of transformation. It has evolved from a soulless structure into a warm, inviting home—a blend of family living and contemporary functionality. The spaces within encourage interaction and engagement, and celebrate private nooks and quieter moments for every member of the family.
